Resume Preparation Techniques

RESUMES

Your resume:

Is your introduction. Highlights your past experiences and skills. Is a personally designed and created document. Is used by employers for differentiation. Is just one stage of the job search process.

Tips for Resume Preparation

Keep it concise and factual.
Personalize your resume and tailor it to a specific opportunity.
Maintain professionalism and keep your information up to date.
Avoid providing personal information (age, identification number, weight, etc.).
Do not use the phrase "References available upon request."
Revise and proofread multiple times for adherence to grammar and punctuation rules.
Leave a 1-½ inch margin on the page.
Start by stating your strongest qualifications first.
Allocate space appropriately: Dedicate 1 page for every 5-7 years of experience.
Remove high school references from your resume after the second year of college.
A chronologically prepared resume presents information in reverse chronological order.
Use action verbs when describing your experiences.
Consider separating relevant and non-relevant experiences for the position.
Use symbols like # and % to indicate the quantity or amount of your information.
Always include your name and contact information at the top of your resume.
Prepare your resume differently for different job targets.
If you don't have much relevant experience for the position, keep your resume to one page.
Organize headings so that the most important points are listed first.
Use similar paper and headings when writing your cover letter.
